Save the toilet!

Focus on Toilets. School Toilets = Crisis. Together with the German Toilet Organization (GTO), we have built a website that offers guidance on how to help oneself in order to improve this situation in the long term.

The German Toilet Organization (GTO) is committed to improving sanitation—both globally and right here at home. Because German schools are in a state of crisis. Broken doors, vandalism, and a lack of toilet paper. One of the consequences: the so-called “drinking blockade.” Children deliberately avoid drinking to avoid having to go to the bathroom. Together with the GTO, we have therefore launched the digital support portal toiletten-machen-schule.de.

From “Where do we start?” to “What’s next?”

There are a lot of questions surrounding this issue at the schools involved. School administrators, dedicated parents, and students are eager to make a change. But where do you start? Who needs to be on board? And what exactly needs to be done? Often, people are simply at a loss. Our challenge was to provide support and offer concrete assistance—with a website serving as a central hub.

The solution: helping people help themselves.

We give local people exactly the tools they need to save their own toilets. To do this, we’ve structured the process into a guided user journey—a four-step process:

  1. Find a team: Who's in?
  2. Reality Check: How bad is it really? (Including the 4-sense inspection).
  3. Making a plan: What needs to happen?
  4. Implementation: Take action and stay the course.

Users have access to personalized features such as a “Wish List” and a “History.” This allows them to pick up exactly where they left off in this marathon project. At the heart of the site is the filterable media library—a toolbox full of templates, checklists, and best-practice examples.

The design firm Buntesamt laid the visual foundation for the project. We took that style, adapted it for the web, and expanded upon it. The design is colorful and engaging, yet at the same time extremely clear, well-organized, and easy to read. This approach transforms a topic that can be uncomfortable and, quite literally, dirty into something accessible and inspiring.

And because practicality doesn't have to be boring, we've added some playful touches. If you look closely, you'll find an animated toilet paper roll in the footer. Or a reward button that sprays stars when you click it.

TMS takes "empowerment" literally

What if you get stuck along the way? No one is left on their own. Students, teachers, and parents can ask their questions directly via chat or email. Behind the scenes, the Toiletten machen Schule team is working hard to provide quick and personalized assistance.

Implemented as a headless project using Statamic as the CMS.
