Allow me: BEN, transformer

For Berlin Energie und Netzholding GmbH (BEN), we were able to make visible what often remains in the background. Network, financing, management for Berlin's energy future - all of this requires systematic communication. And that's exactly what we built.

Some projects land on our desk and we know immediately: this is it. It's a matter close to our hearts. The BEN tender was just such a case. Because it's about Berlin's future. About transformation, about the energy and heating transition in the capital. And of course we want to help shape that.

The task: to make the invisible visible.

BEN's role in this future project is a special one. This is because BEN itself is not walking around Berlin's streets, laying cables, building transformer stations, solar panels on Berlin's roofs or wind turbines. It's not quite that direct. And that's why it's a bit complicated and not so easy to understand. Nevertheless, BEN's task is very important. It ensures the financing of all these projects and provides the necessary planning security without which the energy and heating transition in Berlin would not laufen .

The challenge was therefore to make this essential and less visible role understandable and tangible. In addition, to find a convincing and appealing presentation for BEN that would cut a good figure with urban society, politicians, investors, applicants and businesses alike.

Everything once please!

Our answer to this could only be one thing: a holistic approach. Because different target groups, different channels and different communication. If the website looks different from the social media presence, something is lost. That's why we didn't just relaunch one page, but developed a complete system for digital brand communication.

This includes a flexible key visual and a unique illustration style that dynamically shows the way forward. We have further developed the corporate design in a targeted manner and anchored it in a comprehensive manual as well as in practical templates for social media and office applications. And, of course, the new website be-nh.de as the centerpiece that brings all of this together and makes it tangible.

Design and technology with foresight

A website about energy should also use it sparingly, right? That's exactly why the new BEN website consistently starts in resource-saving dark mode. There is also an "Eco mode" switch: if you activate it, images, videos and animations are reduced. This saves the battery and raises awareness of the energy requirements of a website.

Accessibility was just as important to us. For us, this is not an optional extra, but a duty. After all, the energy and heating transition affects everyone - which is why communication about it must be accessible to all. From clear structures and high color contrasts to clean code, we considered accessibility right from the start.

In terms of technology, we opted for a headless setup with Statamic as the CMS. For BEN, this means maximum flexibility, speed and future-proofing. BEN's editors can maintain content intuitively thanks to a modular construction kit, while the API-first approach allows every conceivable platform to be connected in the future.

More clarity for a complex task

Since the launch, BEN has had a communication platform that perfectly reflects its mission: future-oriented, transparent and reliable. BEN now speaks with one voice across all channels, is technically equipped for all upcoming tasks and editors have an easy time creating content.

So the energy transition for Berlin can come.
